Letter openers, from a desk to a mail center

Most of the machines here use a milling cutter rather than a blade. It chips away up to 3 mm of the envelope edge and leaves a soft, feathered opening, so the contents are not cut, nobody gets a paper cut, and the waste is fine chips in a bin instead of strips on the floor.

The LO-210 and LO-410 suit a team opening a few hundred to two thousand pieces a day. The LO-440 and LO-306 add a mixed-size hopper and sorting. The Postmark 3056, 3068 and 3078 are steel mail-center machines rated to 36,000 envelopes an hour.

LO-210

Mid-sized incoming volume, 400 envelopes a minute on a tabletop.

Designed for small and medium operations opening 200 to 2,000 pieces a day, the LO-210 is a compact tabletop unit. Milling technology produces a smooth, feathered edge and opens envelopes edge to edge for easy extraction, and the chips go to a large bin so the work area stays clear.

  • No-cut setting for counting envelopes
  • Mixed sizes and thicknesses, including overnight envelopes
  • Edge-to-edge opening with a soft feathered edge

LO-410

The LO-210 with a 5.5-inch display and an inkjet printer.

The LO-410 opens mail of mixed sizes and thicknesses at up to 400 envelopes a minute and can print receipt information on each envelope. The large 5.5-inch display gives simple navigation to job functions; with the integrated inkjet printer it counts mail as it is processed, or imprints the time and date.

Milling technology prevents cut contents and produces a smooth, soft, feathered edge, and the chip tray holds the waste from 3,500 envelopes before it needs emptying.

Key features

  • Up to 400 envelopes a minute, 2,000 a day
  • 5.5-inch digital display
  • Integrated inkjet printing: count, date and time
  • Three cut-depth settings and a no-cut counting setting

LO-440

Stack mixed mail in the hopper and let it run.

The LO-440's large input hopper has three belts that adjust to different envelope sizes on the fly, so you do not presort. Stack everything together, tap one edge to push the contents away from the cutting side, and load the batch. It handles envelopes up to 10 by 14 inches and 3/8 inch thick, which covers most flats and overnight envelopes.

Dual hardened high-speed-steel blades resist nicks from clips and staples, cut the full length of the envelope and sharpen themselves. The cutting width is adjustable, so the contents are not damaged.

Key features

  • Automatic feeding from a large three-belt hopper
  • Mixed sizes without presorting
  • Envelopes up to 10 by 14 in. and 3/8 in. thick
  • Dual HSS self-sharpening blades
  • Variable cutting width

Postmark 3056 automatic letter opener

Postmark

Postmark 3056

A steel tabletop opener rated to 24,000 an hour.

The Postmark 3056 removes up to 3 mm of the envelope edge with a milling cutter and deposits the chips in a waste bin. A mixed-thickness separator passes one envelope at a time for cleaner cuts. It opens mixed mail from the smallest to the largest, flats included, up to 6 mm thick.

Solid metal construction throughout, made of steel, with two motors for performance and a longer life.

Key features

  • 24,000 envelopes an hour theoretical, 8,000 in production
  • Milling cutter removes up to 3 mm
  • Mixed-thickness separator
  • Envelopes up to 1/4 in. thick, all sizes and types

Postmark

Postmark 3068

The mail-center opener with stand, bin and counters.

The 3068 opens up to 32,000 envelopes an hour theoretically, 10,000 in production, with the same milling cutter and mixed-thickness separator as the 3056, in a floor-standing unit with the stand and waste bin included.

Resettable, batch, rate and lifetime counters; on-demand and delayed feeding; the cutter switches off for counting; and the speed is variable. An optional 12 mm print head prints the date, time or a bitmap on each envelope.

Postmark 3078

36,000 an hour with a reverse-flow conveyor.

The 3078 is the fastest Postmark opener: 36,000 envelopes an hour theoretical, 20,000 in production. A reverse-flow conveyor brings the opened envelopes back to the operator, who feeds and unloads from one spot, which raises production by about 40 percent.

OMATION Model 306s letter opener on its cabinet, sold by FP as the LO-306

FP Mailing Solutions

LO-306

100 letters in under 10 seconds.

The 306 has the speed and features for high-volume incoming mail centers: 40,000 pieces an hour, including large flats and overnights up to half an inch thick. Milling cutting leaves safe, soft-feathered edges and protects the contents.

The 306s sorter option separates opened mail into two output paths by programmable length, width or thickness, so clean and exception mail are grouped before distribution.

Key features

  • Up to 40,000 pieces an hour
  • Flats and overnights up to 1/2 in. thick
  • Milling cutter with feathered edge
  • Optional 306s sorter with two output paths

Questions we get asked

Will it cut the contents?

Not with a milling cutter. It removes a sliver of the edge, 3 mm at most and adjustable down to no cut at all, and the contents are held clear. Slicing and guillotine cutters can leave a jagged edge and nick what is inside; that is the reason these machines mill instead.

Where does the waste go?

Into a bin. Milling turns the removed edge into fine, dense chips that collect in a chip tray, so there are no strips on the desk. The LO-410's tray holds the chips from about 3,500 envelopes; the Postmark machines include a waste bin with the stand.
